BUILDING UP, BRANCHING OUT: FRINGE AWARD WINNERS RETURN WITH NEW WORKS

The second week of this year's Tiger Dublin Fringe festival will feature a pair of new works by the artists behind last year's Spirit of Fringe Award-winning show, Love+. Very different in form, very different in subject matter, Blackcatfishmusketeer and Briseis After The Black are nonetheless united by the creators' exploratory spirit and commitment to surprising, challenging, and delighting their audience. Now operating under the name Malaprop Theatre, creative team of director Claire O'Reilly, designer Molly O'Cathain, and lighting designer John Gunning, return to this year's festival with a piece of new writing by Dylan Coburn Gray, Blackcatfishmusketeer, in Lir Studio One.

Blackcatfishmusketeer takes on the rich strangeness of the internet and human intimacy as conducted through it. Composed of meetings between pairs of people, the play is a vessel – both thematically and formally – for the same exuberance and charm which characterised Love+; matching Malaprop's ethos of 'making lo-fi theatre about hi-tech things', the play sets out to capture not what the experience of living online looks like, but rather what it feels like. Days pass in the blink between one message and the next, personality's a dog that a tail of words wags, cute cats and profound philosophy alike are only ever half paid attention to. Baroque, bizarre, tender, the play's subject is unchanging human nature in a constantly changing medium.

Writer of Blackcatfishmusketeer, Dylan Coburn Gray, will simultaneously be presenting a theatrical miniature entitled Briseis after the Black at the New Theatre. Each night a different woman actor – completely unaware of what is to come – will step into the roll of Achilles, hero of legend. Achilles is the ultimate man, strong and sure, but only as long as he continues to do everything that everyone expects of him. If he didn't, then he wouldn't be Achilles anymore. Played by a woman reading his words from the script in front of her, Briseis After the Black  shows an Achilles both strange and familiar, in an electrically live and theatrical exploration of fate, free will, and the myths that shape us.

Briseis after the Black is at the New Theatre, 18:15 19th-23rd of September 2016 and 15:30 and 18:15 September 24th, €11 / €13 / €15
Blackcatfishmusketeer is at Lir Studio One, 18:30 19th-23rd of September and 15:30 and 18:30 September 24th,  €11 / €13 / €15
