XL celebrates 25 years of Service bodies Manufacture
Under new ownership, still in the family!
Brisbane: XL Service Bodies, Brisbane-based manufacturers of service bodies for one tonne cab-chassis utes marks its 25th anniversary in business this year. The company has maintained steady growth over its two and a half decades and 2016 saw owners Nick and Kerrie Korganow hand over the reins to daughter Jeanne and son-in-law, JP Shelburn. A new large trucks division – Service Bodies Australia, in conjunction with Isuzu Trucks Australia – is expanding XL’s market reach enormously.

One of the more abiding aspects of XL’s longevity is its steadfast determination to manufacture right here in Australia, using Australian-sourced materials and components wherever possible. Indeed, XL has purchased domestically manufactured BlueScope steel throughout its entire history. Having manufactured tens of thousands of service bodies over 25 years, this amounts to significant expenditure within the local economy.

Future investment

Following study visits to Japan, the home of cutting edge manufacturing technology, XL has invested one million dollars in new machinery to improve the company’s capacity and lights-out manufacturing processing. Managing Director JP Shelburn says the equipment is up and running as of this very week.

Export market continues to expand

XL currently exports service bodies and canopies to 17 different nations across the world, including emerging economies such as Mongolia and major clients such as the U.S. Army. Such is the success and global recognition of the brand that JP says XL’s products have been copied in Asia. “It may be the highest form of flattery,” he says, “but they’ll never be able to do it as well as we do it.”

Back home, XL’s logo is seen on vehicles on the streets of capital cities and small towns, out on farms and in remote locations. “We currently have in excess of two thousand XL service bodies under warranty in every region of the country, all involved in some kind of field service work,” JP explains. “Once we gain a customer, we don’t lose them. They come to count on our product so much that they wouldn’t be without it. Some of our customers are several generations in with each new vehicle they purchase and have us fit out.”

Continual innovation driving growth

As JP explains it, XL’s longevity is a direct result of fierce commitment to innovation. “We have some of the best R&D people in the business helping to shape our future direction. Plus, we travel the world to see what’s happening out there. In recent times, we’ve visited Japan and Germany to gain valuable expertise in design and machinery technology and we’ve based critical decisions on what we’ve learned overseas.”

Still, the company is proud of its dedication to the local workforce and, as a family-led organisation, believes in the human capital behind its success. “Even where we deploy new technologies, we re-allocate our human resources to where they can be more optimally utilised.”

XL will be holding an event to celebrate its 25th anniversary and media representatives are invited to cover the proceedings. Attendees will be able to inspect the company’s latest manufacturing equipment and entertainment will be provided by Japanese dancers. Clients, suppliers and friends of XL have been invited to enjoy a celebratory drink and some refreshments, to say thanks for the support over the last two and a half decades. The event will take place from 1pm to 3pm, next Thursday 8th December, 2016 at XL’s sheet metal building, 1219 Boundary Road, Wacol.

XL Service Bodies has carved a niche in the Australian service vehicles market for the last twenty-five years. Today, the company exports to more than 17 countries and boasts an outstanding reputation for innovation, technology and customer service.
